As the year winds down, it might be the perfect time to upgrade your man checklist to increase your chances of meeting a real-life Mr. Right.
For the January 2013 issue of ESSENCE I explored ways to update your checklist and interviewed women who found love by tweaking their search.
“Some-times people confuse their preference with their priority,” says Niecey Nash, the host of Yahoo’s talk show Let’s Talk About Love. “Preference is all the outer wrapping. What should be your priority are qualities of a lasting relationship.”
It was a lesson The View cohost Sherri Shepherd learned when she was introduced to Lamar Sally at a dinner party thrown by Nash. At 6 feet 6 inches tall, Sally towered over Shepherd’s 5-foot 1-inch frame. When Shepherd stressed, “He’s too tall,” Nash reminded her friend to consider her objective—a man who would love her and care for her son like his own—and not her first choice physically, a man closer to her height. Shepherd took the advice and now she and Sally are happily married.
