Light of the Sun

Today I got off the train grinning. I waited for cabs to zip by before crossing the street to head to work — on time. Jennifer Hudson’s “All Dressed Up in Love” was playing and it wrapped my feelings in a bow.

These last few weeks have been flying by so fast and yet been so amazing. My mom came to town for the weekend and we had a blast being tourists, taking a bus to Niagra Falls and the Thousand Islands, then returning to the city for lunch at Red Rooster and visiting the top of 30 Rock. Sunday I invited my family, close friends, the boyfriend and his mom over for a southern dinner in Harlem. It was the perfect mix of my childhood summers in South Carolina and my grown up self in the cit-ay, with nonstop comedy and girl talk over okra then watermelon.

My firecracker of a mama came to town two days after I returned from a week in Miami for fashion week. I was there for work but definitely squeezed in some South Beach fun.

And before that I opened the month in New Orleans for Essence Music Festival. Sitting in center floor seats, 15 rows from my favorite artist Jill Scott. I felt my eyes start to mist. Five years ago I spent my first summer in New York and had the time of my life. At the end I wondered if that would be what I considered the best time of my life. The time was even more special because 365 days before I was going to radiation everyday after six months of chemo for Hodgkins Lymphoma, thinking of my future in my fly girl heels. I was still styling with an IV in my arm:)

As I watched a glowing Jill Scott six years later and sang along to all her new songs, I remembered those summers and knew it definitely got better.

Our best is always yet to come.
