Love & the Urbanite

I am hosting Love & the Urbanite, a relationships workshop for women next month in New York with all proceeds benefiting Harlem CARES. It will include an intimate and interactive session on the realities of love and relationships that know one tells us about. It feels so invigorating that after doing workshops in other cities, my first relationships session in Harlem will be at the former Hotel Theresa, which is now home to Columbia University’s Institute for Urban and Minority Education.

But my excitement was almost cut short! I created the eventbrite and selected the 60 or so friends and contacts in NY to send it to. I pressed “send” and the invite went to all 2,000 contacts in my Gmail account!! I felt mortified thinking of my boss and people I have briefly been in contact with or hadn’t communicated with in years getting the email for an event for black bachelorettes. Then with the help of my boyfriend it slowly sunk in that it could actually be a good thing for everyone in my network to know what I was up to.

And it has been just that. First my dad’s girlfriend emailed me from Atlanta on whether the workshop was a webinar she could join. It’s not, but she gave me a new idea for the future. I bumped into a former coworker who got the email and he shared that he passed on.

I really am trying to do something everyday that scares me and my unexpected blunder is turning out to be a blessing.
