Always a Bridesmaid: Rashida was still on a high from being a bridesmaid when she met the man who would make her a bride. After being in a friend’s wedding, the graphic designer flew into JFK airport in May 2005 and found herself looking for a cab home. Richard owns and rents yellow cabs in the city and took her home. “We talked the entire trip and realized that we shared the same background and goals. “Later that week they went to opening night of “Star Wars” and discovered their own cosmic connection.
Making Her House Their Home: Rashida and Richard decided to move in together two years into their relationship, the first time either had lived with a partner. “Living together took our relationship to a higher level and reconfirmed our companionship. Plus, he’s a great cook,” she says.
On Bended Knee: Family reigns supreme to Rashida and Richard, and living together allowed them to bond close to one another’s family and friends. Richard was certain to make sure all their family was present when he popped the question and proposed to his bride at his mother’s 50th birthday party in New York.
Beach-Bound Bride: The duo loves the beach and went for a Caribbean-inspired wedding since Richard was born in Jamaica and Rashida has Jamaican lineage. They found a beach close by Rashida’s parents and put the proud in-laws to work planning the day. Rashida thought she had found her dream dress at a sample sale until she stumbled upon one even better five months before the wedding and had the perfect mermaid gown for her beach wedding. “I was extremely excited walking down the aisle and was so happy that Richard and I were going to make the ultimate commitment in front of our friends and family,” she says.
Bridal Budget Bite: Rashida and Richard put their big families to good use for their special day to cut costs. Richard’s cousin was the DJ and a friend created a video to show at the wedding. For favors Richard’s mom made Jamaican wedding cake given to each guest, along with body lotion from Rashida’s beauty line, Marie Deneen. The newlyweds also cut costs by requesting items for their honeymoon on their registry, in place of some home items since they were already living in harmony.
